The Government of India places paramount importance on solid waste management as a key pillar of its green initiatives and environmental sustainability efforts. To bolster the development of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants, a range of compelling incentives and benefits have been introduced. These include the recognition of energy derived from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as renewable, making WtE plants eligible for Renewable Electricity Certificates, in addition to revenue generated from electricity sales. A significant capital expenditure subsidy of up to 35% is available under the Swacch Bharat Mission, underlining the government’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices.<\/p>

Further enhancing the viability of WtE projects, the Ministry of Power has notified competitive feed-in tariffs ranging from Rs. 7.04 to Rs. 7.89 per unit of electricity. This not only stimulates economic growth but also prioritizes the purchase of electricity generated by WtE plants by state distribution companies (discoms). To alleviate the financial burden on these projects, equipment procured for WtE plants is exempt from both central taxes like excise and state taxes like VAT.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

State governments have played a pivotal role by developing action plans for sewage management and the restoration of water quality in aquatic resources. These plans are instrumental in mitigating the adverse effects of sewage discharge and rejuvenating the ecological balance in our water bodies.<\/p>

Furthermore, the installation of online effluent monitoring systems stands as a technological milestone. These systems serve to closely monitor and regulate the discharge of effluents into rivers and water bodies, ensuring that industrial and municipal discharges adhere to stringent environmental standards. This approach is a significant step toward curbing pollution in aquatic ecosystems.<\/p>

To comprehensively gauge water quality and guide pollution abatement efforts, the government has established monitoring networks. These networks systematically assess water quality, providing invaluable data for informed decision-making and effective mitigation strategies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Government of India has made significant strides in addressing the multifaceted challenges of pollution, which cast a shadow over cities, towns, and metropolises. Pollution, stemming from the introduction of contaminants into the environment\u2014be it air, water, or soil\u2014poses a grave threat to ambient conditions. In response to these concerns, the government has embarked on a series of concerted efforts aimed at curbing pollution on various fronts.<\/p>

Key initiatives encompass the notification of National Ambient Air Quality Standards, marking a pivotal step in defining benchmarks for air quality across the nation. Environmental regulations and statutes have been carefully formulated to promote responsible practices and reduce the environmental footprint. To ensure the monitoring of ambient air quality, a comprehensive network has been established, providing real-time data for informed decision-making.<\/p>

The government’s commitment extends to fostering the adoption of cleaner and alternate fuels such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and ethanol blends, reducing vehicular emissions. Concurrently, the promotion of cleaner production processes within industries further advances the sustainability agenda.<\/p>

In 2015, the National Air Quality Index was launched under the leadership of the Prime Minister, enhancing transparency and awareness. To address vehicular emissions, the implementation of Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) norms in 63 cities, with plans for universalization by 2017, and a leapfrog to BS-VI fuel standards by April 2020 exemplify the government’s determination to combat air pollution.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
